Jordaan
The postcard version of Amsterdam
Once a working-class district of tradesmen and immigrants, the Jordaan is now exactly what people picture when they think of Amsterdam. You'll find narrow canals, seventeenth-century gables, blooming flower boxes, and brown cafes where locals have claimed the same table for thirty years.
Life in the Jordaan
You can enjoy weekly markets on the Noordermarkt and Lindengracht, with the Nine Streets shopping district just around the corner. Central Station is also within a fifteen-minute walk. Apartments here are full of character rather than huge. Expect exposed beams and canal views instead of massive floor space.
Good to know
- Catch the Saturday farmers' market on the Noordermarkt
- Find the Anne Frank House and the Westerkerk on the eastern edge
- The quietest streets are located west of the Prinsengracht
