Why 2 Months Is the Sweet Spot for Many Amsterdam Arrivals

Two months is City Retreat's minimum stay — and for many professionals and expats arriving in Amsterdam, it turns out to be exactly the right amount of time. Long enough to register your address, get a BSN, open a bank account, and start properly exploring the city and its neighbourhoods. Short enough that you're not locked into a lease while you're still figuring out where you want to be long-term.

Amsterdam's private rental market effectively requires Dutch payslips, income multiples, and a 12-month minimum commitment — conditions that most new arrivals can't meet on day one. A 2-month serviced apartment rental bridges that gap: a proper home, a formal tenancy agreement, and all the administrative infrastructure you need, without the barriers of the private market. For more on why the private market is difficult for new arrivals, see our analysis of Amsterdam's 2026 housing market.

📋 The Key Thing to Know

Amsterdam's municipality defines "short stay" as tourist rentals of under 30 days — subject to strict permit requirements and heavy fines. City Retreat operates registered serviced accommodation under Dutch residential tenancy law, from 2 months. This means you receive a formal tenancy agreement, can register your address for a BSN, and are fully protected by Dutch tenancy legislation. See our Amsterdam short stay rentals guide for the full breakdown.

Who Books a 2-Month Rental in Amsterdam?

A 2-month stay suits a specific set of situations — here are the most common ones we see at City Retreat.

🌍

First Arrivals Using It as a Landing Pad

Expats who've just accepted a role in Amsterdam and need somewhere to land while they get their BSN, open a bank account, and work out which neighbourhood they want to live in longer-term. Two months gives enough time to do all of this without rushing.

💼

Short-Term Project Workers

Consultants, contractors, and specialists on assignments of exactly 2–3 months — often sent by a company, needing a proper registered address rather than a hotel room.

🎓

Semester-Exchange Students

Students at Amsterdam's universities for a single semester — typically October to January or February to June — who need registered accommodation for their visa paperwork and municipality registration.

🔄

Residents in Transition

Local residents mid-renovation, between a property sale and purchase, or trying out a new neighbourhood before committing to a longer lease.

What all of these have in common: the need for a proper home — not a hotel — for a defined period, without committing to 12 months. For a broader look at who City Retreat serves, see our temporary accommodation guide.

The Winter Discount: Why November to February Is the Best Time to Book

If your 2-month stay falls between 1 November and 28 February, City Retreat applies an automatic winter discount on top of the standard pricing. This applies to any booking where the check-in date falls within that window — you don't need to negotiate it or use a code.

There's a practical reason for this: Amsterdam in winter is quieter, the tourist crowds are gone, and the city settles into something closer to its real day-to-day character. For expats and professionals who are actually here to work and live rather than sightsee, winter is genuinely a good time to arrive — and the discount reflects that.

💰 City Retreat Discount Summary

4-month discount: Any stay of 4 months or more receives 10% off the full duration — applied retroactively if your stay naturally extends to that point, so there's no need to commit upfront.

Winter discount: Any booking with a check-in date between 1 November and 28 February receives an additional discount on top of the standard rate.

Both discounts can apply to the same stay. A 4-month booking checking in on 1 November receives both.

BSN Registration on a 2-Month Rental

One of the most important practical differences between a City Retreat rental and a hotel or short-let platform: you can register your Amsterdam address with the municipality from day one of your tenancy, regardless of whether you're staying 2 months or 2 years.

Municipality registration gives you a BSN (Burgerservicenummer) — required for a Dutch bank account, health insurance, employer payroll, and almost every official process in the Netherlands. Anyone staying more than 4 months must register; for shorter stays you can register as a non-resident in the RNI to receive a BSN for administrative purposes.

Your City Retreat tenancy agreement is the document the municipality requires as proof of residential address. For the full step-by-step process, see our Amsterdam registration and BSN guide.

What If You Need to Stay Longer Than 2 Months?

This is the most common outcome. Many tenants book for 2 months, settle in, and find they need — or simply want — to extend. Because City Retreat contracts are indefinite with no fixed end date, extending is straightforward: you simply continue, and the 4-month discount kicks in automatically if your stay reaches that point.

If you're already thinking you might need 3 or 4 months, it's worth reading our 3-month rentals guide and 6-month rentals guide for a more detailed look at what those stays typically look like. The apartment, the contract and the pricing structure are the same — only the duration and applicable discounts differ.

If your plans change the other way — if you need to leave before your expected date — one calendar month's notice is all that's required. No penalty, no lock-in. Give notice on the 15th of the month and your tenancy ends on the last day of the following month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2 months really the minimum — no exceptions?

Yes, 2 months is the firm minimum with no exceptions. City Retreat operates registered serviced accommodation under Dutch residential tenancy law, which requires formal contracts and municipality registration support — neither of which is practical for stays under 2 months. For shorter stays, hotels or aparthotels in Amsterdam are the better route.

Can I extend beyond 2 months if my plans change?

Yes — and this is very common. All City Retreat contracts are indefinite, meaning your tenancy simply continues until you give one calendar month's notice to leave. If your stay extends to 4 months or more, the 10% long-stay discount applies automatically to the full duration. There's no need to renegotiate or sign a new agreement.

What exactly is the winter discount and how does it work?

Any booking with a check-in date between 1 November and 28 February qualifies for a winter discount on the standard rate. It's applied automatically — no code needed. If your stay also reaches 4 months, both the winter discount and the 4-month discount apply.

Do I need Dutch payslips or a Dutch employment contract to book?

No. Unlike private Amsterdam landlords, who typically require Dutch payslips and a salary of at least three times the monthly rent, City Retreat doesn't apply those requirements. This makes our apartments accessible to expats on international contracts, pre-employment arrangements, or those arriving before their Dutch payroll has started.

Can I register my address and get a BSN in a 2-month rental?

Yes. All City Retreat apartments support full address registration with the Gemeente Amsterdam from the start of your tenancy, regardless of whether you're staying 2 months or longer. Your tenancy agreement is the document the municipality requires. For stays under 4 months, you can register as a non-resident in the RNI to receive a BSN for administrative purposes.

How quickly can I move in?

Often within a few days of confirming your booking, subject to availability. Amsterdam's rental market moves fast — the earlier you can give us your preferred move-in date, the better the selection available to you. If you're arriving at short notice, let us know and we'll prioritise finding something suitable.
